                                What is Reiki?

The name Reiki is actually two words and refers not only to what the energy is, but to the system of applying the energy. The kanji for Reiki, pictured at the left is comprised of two characters, Rei and ki. Rei is most generally recognized as meaning Universal. More accurately, this word is interpreted to mean higher knowledge or spiritual consciousness. Ki is life energy, which is also known as Chi, from the Chinese culture. In essence, Reiki can be defined as spiritually guided life energy.

The practitioner connects the subject to the energy through a hands-on/hands-off method of treatment (See, "What to Expect-Humans for more detailed description of a session). The subject then takes the energy in and uses it wherever it is needed, whether on a physical, spiritual, emotional, or mental level.

Reiki can do no harm and always goes to the source of a problem. This means that although a physical pain may be experienced by an individual, the pain may be a manifestation of a deeper issue. The belief is, if the source of issue is treated, the pain will be eliminated.

The system of Reiki was developed by Mikao Usui, a Japanese gentleman with a lifetime of spiritual study. He developed this system originally for his own and his student's spiritual development and liked to describe the healing effects as being a "happy side effect". Here in the West it is used primarily for healing purposes.

Reiki is a wonderful stress-reducer for both humans and animals, which allows the body's own immune systems to do its work to help heal. One of the greatest overall effects of a Reiki treatment is a very relaxed state of being, as though having just enjoyed a massage without actually having had one. Individuals often report being able to sleep better than they have in months after receiving Reiki, with intense relaxation immediately following the treatment and carrying over the next several days.

Reiki can be utilized to treat chronic, painful conditions such as arthritis, migraines and cancer as well as everyday situations like colds, flu, sinus issues, bruises, cuts, fatigue and broken bones. It can also be used as a complementary therapy in the case of surgeries to increase relaxation before, and to speed healing after, surgery. It is often used to reduce uncomfortable side effects from chemotherapy. It has been regularly noted that patients in hospitals who receive Reiki treatments recover more quickly and go home sooner than those who do not.

Reiki is also being utilized for pain relief support for illnesses such as Mesothelioma, a form cancer. Visit
Mesothelioma.com to learn more.

Reiki can be utilized to heal emotional trauma taking place in either the present or the past, and can even be sent into the future to help ease stressful situations such as surgery. Reiki is also deeply comforting in end-of-life situations where palliative therapies are used to ease the individual's transition from their physical existence

As mentioned, animals can benefit greatly from Reiki energy. Dogs, cats, bunnies, iguanas, ferrets, and other small animals enjoy it, as well as large animals such as horses, sheep, goats, pigs, and so on. The same kinds of illnesses and injuries that apply to humans often occur in animals and can be successfully treated with Reiki, including support during end-of-life times. Please see the, "What to Expect During an Animal Reiki Treatment" page for a more complete picture of Reiki for animals.
